Toyota recalls 13,000 HiLux utes over sudden power steering failure risk
More than 13,000 examples of the 2025-26 Toyota HiLux have been recalled in Australia over a wiring fault that can cause instant loss of power steering assistance with no prior warning.

Toyota has issued a recall covering 13,390 examples of the current-generation HiLux in Australia citing a fault that can cause the electric power steering to fail without warning.
The issue affects vehicles fitted with a Toyota Genuine bull bar or nudge bar paired with a light bar, where the wiring harness may have been incorrectly installed during accessory fitting.
If the earth connection to the power steering module is compromised, the EPS can cut out instantly, making the steering significantly heavier to control. There are no warning lights or symptoms beforehand.

The federal government has flagged the defect as a potential cause of serious injury or death if left unaddressed.
Affected vehicles were built between August 28 2025 and February 24 2026, covering all grade variants including WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X, in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.
Toyota will contact owners of affected vehicles directly and ask them to book a dealership inspection. The fix involves checking and, if needed, correcting the orientation of the EPS earth terminal. The repair takes around 30 minutes and is free of charge.
Owners can also check their VIN against the official recall list on the federal government's Product Safety Australia website.
If you own a 2025-26 HiLux with genuine Toyota bull bar or nudge bar accessories fitted, contact your nearest Toyota dealer to book an inspection before the recall notice arrives.
