Key takeaways

  • Automatic LandCruiser 70 Series orders reopen after emissions-related pause
  • New AdBlue tank added across range for Euro 6 compliance
  • Manual variants stay off sale as 2026 sales drop 82%

Toyota Australia has reopened orders for the automatic 2026 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series range, ending a pause that stretched back to September 2025. Customers can now order automatic versions of the 76 Series wagon, 78 Series Troop Carrier and 79 Series ute, with production set to restart in August.

The relaunch follows a mandatory upgrade. Toyota needed to fit a 20-litre AdBlue tank to keep the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel compliant with Euro 6 'Stage C' rules, which apply to any heavy-duty vehicle over 3.5 tonnes GVM sold in Australia from November 2025.

Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations John Pappas confirmed the timeline. "After pausing orders for certain LandCruiser 70 Series in 2025 to manage customer expectations around vehicle supply challenges, we are excited to say that order books are now back open," he said.

Manual 70 Series still locked out

Not everyone gets to order yet. Manual versions of the 78 Series, 79 Series double-cab chassis and 76 Series GXL wagon remain unavailable "for the time being", with no return date given.

How the AdBlue system works

The tank uses selective catalytic reduction to inject urea into the exhaust stream, cutting nitrogen oxide emissions. On 76, 78 and 79 Series double-cab models, the filler sits above the front-left fender under a lockable lid. Single-cab chassis grades get their port on the left side, between the cab and rear wheels.

SpecFigure
Engine2.8-litre turbo-diesel
Power150kW (3000-3400rpm)
Torque500Nm (1600-2800rpm)

Troop Carrier fuel tank130 litres (down from 180L)

Power and torque outputs haven't changed. The only other running change is a smaller 130-litre fuel tank on Troop Carrier grades, down from 180L, bringing it in line with the rest of the range.

Toyota hasn't confirmed Australian pricing for the reopened order books, and LandCruiser 70 Series sales are down 82% for the year to the end of May, a direct result of the extended pause.

Analysis: why the manual gearbox might not come back

Toyota restarting automatic production first, while three separate manual configurations stay frozen, signals where the compliance and supply priority sits. The automatic lineup carries the bulk of retail volume, making it the logical variant to fix and ship first while Toyota works through a backlog worsened by that 82% sales collapse.

That leaves manual buyers, typically fleet, mining and remote-work customers who value the gearbox for low-range control and reliability, without a stated return date. If the manual doesn't reappear within the next few months, it starts to look less like a temporary compliance delay and more like a quiet phase-out, pushing that buyer base toward rivals like the Nissan Patrol or Ineos Grenadier.

Automatic buyers can order again from today. Manual buyers, and the tradies and remote operators who rely on that gearbox, are still waiting on a date Toyota hasn't given.
