The GT55 is hardly slow, putting out 600kW and 1800Nm for a 2.8-second 0-100km/h time and a claimed WLTP range of up to 700km.

Both variants ride on the new AMG.EA 800-volt architecture, with a 106kWh battery pack and 600kW DC fast charging. Mercedes-AMG claims a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in just 11 minutes, adding more than 460km of range.

Simulated V8 sound and gear shifts

To win over fans of the old twin-turbo V8, AMG has fitted a synthesised soundtrack drawing on 1600 audio files modelled on the GT R's 4.0-litre engine. The system also simulates physical gear changes, similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

Inside the cabin, drivers face a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 14-inch central touchscreen, while the front passenger gets their own 14-inch display. Paddles on the steering wheel deliver a temporary 110kW boost in the GT63 and 50kW in the GT55.

Carbon-ceramic brakes feature up front, with steel rotors at the rear. Active aerodynamics, rear-wheel steering and adjustable air suspension all come along for the ride.
