A different animal to the MG4 hatch

It's important to understand what the MG4 EV Urban actually is, because it isn't simply a stripped-back version of the existing MG4. It's a physically larger vehicle sitting on MG's new E3 platform with a completely different brief. Where the standard MG4 prioritises driving dynamics with a rear-wheel drive layout and multi-link independent rear suspension, the Urban goes front-wheel drive with a torsion beam rear setup. The trade-off is a more budget-friendly price point and a bigger, more practical cabin.
Both variants come generously equipped as standard. Heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, 12.8-inch touchscreen, 7-inch driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera, MG Pilot safety suite, and V2L charging are all included across the range. Seven airbags are standard, along with a comprehensive list of active safety features including adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and autonomous emergency braking.

Four drive modes are available - Normal, Sport, Eco, and Custom - along with four regenerative braking settings including one-pedal driving. A heat pump is standard on both variants, which helps maintain real-world range in colder conditions.
Seven exterior colours are available: York White (standard paint), plus Brixton Blue, Stone Green, Black Pearl, Sterling Silver, Diamond Red and Camden Grey in metallic.
How it stacks up against rivals
The MG4 EV Urban's driveaway pricing is its sharpest weapon. The BYD Dolphin starts lower at $29,990, but that's before on-road costs so the real-world gap is smaller than it looks. The GAC Aion UT is (currently) slightly cheaper at $30,990 driveaway whilst the GWM Ora asks $33,990 driveaway, meaning the Urban undercuts it by $2,000 at entry level.
Further up the range, the BYD Atto 3 starts at $39,990 before on-road costs and the base MG4 hatch sits at $37,990 in the same position. The Urban Long Range at $34,990 driveaway looks sharp against both.
The Kia EV3 and Chery E5 round out the competitive set, though neither matches this price point. MG is also working on an MG2 EV to sit below the Urban targeting the BYD Atto 1's $24,990 before on-road costs entry point.

At $31,990 driveaway with 316km of range, a full safety suite, heated seats, and a 10-year warranty, the MG4 EV Urban is one of the strongest entry-level EV propositions Australia has seen.
