Explore the BYD range

Chinese carmaker BYD has dispatched almost 5,000 new energy vehicles to Australia aboard its own purpose-built car carrier, the BYD Zhengzhou.

The vessel left Shanghai this week on its maiden Australian voyage with cargo split between BYD and Denza models bound for customers across the east coast. It's the latest move in BYD's push to deliver 30,000 vehicles to Australian buyers in the coming months.

What's on board the BYD Zhengzhou

The ship is carrying 4,810 vehicles with the all-electric BYD Sealion 7 mid-size SUV and compact BYD Atto 2 accounting for more than 2,000 of them between them. Both models have surged in popularity as Australians look for cheaper-to-run alternatives to petrol SUVs.

Also on board are the Denza B5 luxury off-roader and Denza D9 luxury people mover, part of BYD's premium sister brand that launched locally earlier in 2026.

The Zhengzhou will travel roughly 9756 kilometres across the Pacific before docking in Melbourne on 2 June. From there it heads to Sydney and Brisbane, with stock spread evenly across the three ports so east coast customers take delivery with minimal delay.

Essential workers get priority delivery

BYD is putting essential workers at the front of the queue. Healthcare workers, teachers and emergency services personnel who have already placed orders will be amongst the first to take delivery from this shipment.

"BYD is demonstrating that it has the ability to respond quickly to customer needs, and act fast," said BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins. "BYD's vertically integrated system allows it to scale production as required, with a fleet of BYD-owned vessels ready to take cars wherever they need to go almost anywhere in the world."

The Zhengzhou is one of eight roll-on roll-off vessels owned by BYD, giving the brand a level of control over global logistics few rivals can match.

BYD's Australian sales surge

The shipment lands at a pivotal moment for BYD in Australia. The brand was the country's second best-selling marque in April, behind only Toyota and ahead of Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Mazda.

Sales of the BYD Sealion 7 alone are up more than 300% in 2026 pushing it into direct rivalry with the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-5.

More BYD shipments are scheduled in the weeks ahead as the brand works through its order book.

For buyers stuck on long waitlists, the wait is getting shorter.
