  • Orders open now with first deliveries from September 2026

BYD has given its best-selling electric SUV its biggest overhaul yet, and the 2026 BYD Atto 3 Evo arrives with a genuine surprise. The flagship Premium ditches front-wheel drive for a rear-drive layout, more power and a longer range.

Orders are open now across Australia with the first cars due in showrooms from September.

What's new on the 2026 BYD Atto 3 Evo

The range shrinks to two variants. Dynamic carries over the pre-update car's front-wheel drive setup, while Premium moves to rear-wheel drive.

The old entry-level Essential has been dropped, so the 2026 BYD Atto 3 Evo now opens at $41,990 before on-road costs, a $2,000 lift over the previous starting point.

Both grades keep the same footprint as before at 4,455mm long and 1,875mm wide, riding on an unchanged 2,720mm wheelbase.

Rear-wheel drive and a 5.5-second sprint

The Premium is where the real change sits.

A 74.88kWh Blade battery feeds a 230kW/380Nm rear motor, good for a 0 to 100km/h time of 5.5 seconds. BYD reckons that's the sort of pace once reserved for homegrown V8s, minus the fuel bills.

Range climbs to 510km on the WLTP cycle, up from 420km. The Premium also rides on BYD's 800V e-Platform 3.0, lifting DC fast charging to 220kW and cutting a 0 to 80% top-up to 25 minutes. Braked towing doubles to 1,500kg.

Dynamic is unchanged. Its 60.48kWh battery and 150kW/310Nm front motor return 420km of range, with 400V architecture capping DC charging at 110kW, or 41 minutes for 0 to 80%.

One thing missing locally, though: the dual-motor all-wheel drive version sold overseas doesn't make the Australian cut.

Interior and practicality

Inside, BYD has calmed the Atto 3's divisive cabin. The two-tone colourway gives way to a subdued grey, the chunky console shifter becomes a slim column-mounted stalk, and the driver display grows from 5 to 8.8 inches. Wireless phone charging jumps from 15W to 50W.

The rear-drive Premium is the practicality pick. Losing the front motor frees a 101-litre frunk, and boot space grows from 434 to 490 litres.

The cheap Atto 3 is gone. What replaces it is quicker, longer-legged and rear-driven, but the $2,000 step up means the sub-$40k EV SUV baton now passes to the smaller Atto 2. Buyers chasing the Premium's pace will want to lock in an order before the September wave lands.
