Boxy new Haval H7 adds AWD hybrid power from under $50,000 driveaway

GWM will put its new Haval H7 on sale in Australia in mid October, priced from under $50,000 driveaway. The boxy midsize SUV replaces the current H7 after less than 18 months. It comes with all wheel drive on both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
The outgoing H7 Vanta Hybrid sells for $46,990 driveaway with front wheel drive only. That means the entry hybrid should cost no more than about $3000 extra, with AWD added.
The new H7 made its local debut at Everything Electric in Sydney. It sits alongside the H6, H6 GT and upcoming Jolion Max. It will compete with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and the PHEV lines up against the BYD Sealion 6 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
New Haval H7 hybrid and PHEV specs
Both versions use GWM's Hi4 system, which places an electric motor on each axle for all wheel drive. The outputs below come from Australian government approval documents. GWM has not yet published its own local specifications.

Size and features
The H7 looks like the Tank 300 off roader, but it is built on a monocoque body like a regular SUV, not a ladder frame. It measures 4680mm long, 1950mm wide and 1843mm tall. That makes it slightly shorter, but wider and taller, than the car it replaces.
The 2738mm wheelbase is 72mm shorter than before and now matches the Haval H6.
Features shown on GWM's Australian website include:
- A 15.6 inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and over the air updates
- A 360 degree camera and panoramic sunroof
- A rear differential lock and eight drive modes
- 19 inch wheels
- A 220 volt power outlet
GWM hasn't said which grades get which features. A seven seat H7 Plus is sold overseas but hasn't been confirmed for Australia.
