Key takeaways
- New Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLS 63 revealed with overhauled M177 EVO V8
- Outputs unchanged at 450kW/850Nm; mild-hybrid adds temporary 17kW/205Nm
- Australian pricing and arrival date not yet confirmed
Mercedes-AMG has revealed updated versions of its GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+ performance SUVs, headlined by a comprehensively reworked twin-turbo V8 built to remain road-legal under tightening global emissions rules. Australian pricing and on-sale timing are yet to be confirmed.
Overhauled V8, same outputs

At the centre of both models is AMG's new M177 EVO 4.0-litre biturbo V8, hand-built in Affalterbach under the brand's "One man, one engine" philosophy. A new flat-plane crankshaft reduces rotating mass and sharpens throttle response, while a revised intake camshaft, updated fuel injection, redesigned intake and exhaust ports, and improved turbocharger hardware round out the changes. A petrol particulate filter is now fitted as standard worldwide.
Despite the breadth of revisions, outputs remain at 450kW and 850Nm, with peak torque on tap between 2,500 and 4,500rpm. AMG board member Michael Schiebe put the rationale directly: "We have fundamentally revised the power unit and secured its presence in our portfolio for the long term. The result is an engine that impresses with agile response, strong performance and a pronounced appetite for revs, while at the same time meeting increasingly demanding regulations worldwide."
A 48V mild-hybrid integrated starter generator contributes a temporary 17kW and 205Nm at low revs, aiding response off the line, enabling energy recuperation under braking and smoothing stop-start behaviour.
Sprint times are unchanged: 3.9 seconds to 100km/h for the GLE 63 S and 4.2 seconds for the GLS 63, both electronically limited to 280km/h.

New look, sharper interior

Up front, both models wear a completely redesigned AMG-specific radiator grille, enlarged air intakes and an exclusive LED light signature. At the rear, twin exhaust outlets and a performance-oriented diffuser treatment make the flagship variants immediately recognisable.
Inside, AMG's new MB.OS operating system powers high-resolution displays showing torque distribution, G-forces and detailed engine parameters. The updated AMG Performance steering wheel is offered in Nappa leather, MICROCUT microfibre or carbon. Seat upholstery spans four Nappa leather Exclusive colours plus bespoke MANUFAKTUR finishes including yacht blue, tartufo brown and carmine red. Exterior MANUFAKTUR paint options include Patagonia red metallic, mystic blue metallic and Ireland mid-green metallic.
The new AMG Performance exhaust uses active valve control to shift the V8's character from restrained in Comfort mode to full aggression in Sport+, adjustable via drive mode or a dedicated centre console button.
Suspension and chassis
AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilisation is standard on both models, using electromechanical stabilisers that sample road and driving data up to 1,000 times per second to minimise body roll. The RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive damping adjusts ride height automatically regardless of load, lowers by 10mm in Sport and Sport+ modes, and raises by 55mm in Trail mode for light off-road use. A manual lift of up to 20mm is also available at the push of a button.
Power reaches all four wheels through AMG's Performance 4MATIC+ system with fully variable torque distribution, paired with a standard electronically controlled rear locking differential for sharper cornering response and reduced wheelspin.
Australian pricing and availability
Mercedes-AMG has not confirmed local pricing or a delivery window. Based on competitor reporting, current Australian prices sit around $273,300 for the GLE 63 S SUV and $307,100 for the GLS 63 before on-roads, with an increase likely given the scale of updates.
Buyers cross-shopping this segment should also consider the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5 M, though neither combines a hand-built V8 with the GLS 63's seven-seat practicality.
A future-proofed V8 that keeps every performance number intact is a strong answer to buyers worried AMG might water things down.
