The 2027 Geely Starray EM-i Inspire has scored a major battery upgrade with the plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV now offering 136km of pure electric range and a combined driving range of 996km. Priced from $41,490 before on-road costs, the rebadged Inspire Extended Range lands in Australian dealerships from late May 2026.

The flagship grade swaps its outgoing 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery for a larger 29.8kWh unit. That extra 11.4kWh adds 53km of WLTP electric driving range, pushing daily commutes well within fuel-free territory for most Australian buyers.

2027 Geely Starray EM-i Inspire Extended Range plug-in hybrid SUV in Australia

DC fast charging speed doubles from 30kW to 60kW on the Inspire Extended Range, with Geely claiming a 30 to 80% top-up in around 16 minutes. Combined-cycle fuel consumption drops from 2.4L/100km to just 1.4L/100km, a 42% improvement.

The entry-level Starray EM-i Complete carries over unchanged at $37,490 MSRP, retaining the 18.4kWh battery, 83km of EV range and 30kW DC charging.

The larger battery first surfaced in Australia late last year when a Starray EM-i set a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption by a plug-in hybrid production SUV on the Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive, returning 3.83L/100km across mixed conditions.

Updated standard equipment

Both MY27 variants gain a 5m Mode 2 charging cable, towing preparation and trailer stability assist. The Inspire Extended Range also picks up a front-seat massage function as standard.

In the mid-size PHEV SUV segment, the Starray EM-i Inspire Extended Range undercuts the BYD Sealion 6 Extended Range by around $5,000 and sits well below the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV on price.

This is now one of the cheapest ways into a plug-in hybrid SUV with usable real-world electric range, with most daily driving achievable without burning a drop of fuel.
