Volkswagen has reclaimed bragging rights at the Nürburgring. The 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 has set a new lap record for front-wheel drive production cars, clocking 7:44.523 minutes around the 20.832km Nordschleife. That time narrowly pips the Honda Civic Type R's 7:44.881 benchmark, set in 2023.

How the 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 cracked the record

VW test and development driver Benny Leuchter piloted the anniversary hot hatch around the Green Hell, shaving nearly two seconds off the Edition 50's own 7:46.13 time set last year in damp conditions. The new lap also makes it the fastest Volkswagen production car ever at the Nordschleife, beating the 2022 Golf R 20 Years (7:47.31).

Leuchter's record-setting car was fitted with the optional GTI Performance Package. That kit drops the ride height by a further 5mm on top of the standard Edition 50's 15mm lower stance and adds 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres. A lightweight R-Performance titanium exhaust and stiffer springs round out the package.

"The Nordschleife is unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps," Leuchter said. "And the same is true for this GTI: with impressive power, a very neutral set-up and at the same time the ability to take any bumps in its stride."
