A new rear motor

This is the first Starray EM-i to get a rear electric motor, and it does more than add traction. The extra 80kW and 150Nm push combined system output to 220kW and 412Nm, cutting the 0-100km/h sprint to 6.3 seconds. The front-drive Inspire needs 8.2 seconds.

Geely has also fitted a five-link rear suspension in place of the four-link setup used on front-wheel-drive variants, which should sharpen body control and smooth out rougher surfaces.

Two new drive modes come with it, Snow and Off-road, aimed at buyers who point the car past the suburbs on weekends.

A larger 60L fuel tank makes the most impact here. Combined WLTP range climbs to 1,065km, a 69km gain over the Inspire. The trade-off is small with electric-only range slipping from 136km to 130km, and fuel use rising from 1.6L/100km to 1.7L/100km.

Australian pricing and timing are both confirmed. At $44,990 plus on-roads, the Inspire AWD undercuts the all-wheel-drive versions of the BYD Sealion 6 and the GWM Haval H6 plug-in hybrid, two of its closest plug-in hybrid SUV rivals.
