Key takeaways
- Volkswagen's Jetta X previews an affordable all-electric SUV for China
- Rumoured price under ¥100,000 (approx. AU$21,500) when it launches later in 2026
- Four new Jetta NEV models planned for China by 2028 & no other markets confirmed
Volkswagen's Chinese sub-brand Jetta has pulled the wraps off the Jetta X concept, a rugged all-electric SUV that made its global debut at a media night ahead of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. It's the clearest sign yet that Jetta, which has operated as an independent VW Group entry-level brand in China since 2019, is serious about competing in the country's booming electric vehicle market.

The concept wears a matte forest green finish and leans into a boxy, off-road-ready design philosophy Jetta calls "Modern Robust." Up front, narrow LED headlights stretch across the fascia, while the bumper integrates a skid plate and red tow hooks. Black cladding outlines the trapezoidal wheel arches, giving the X a purposeful stance that's more Dacia Duster than Volkswagen Tiguan. Inside, physical controls are minimal, with a large central touchscreen and a secondary passenger display doing most of the heavy lifting.

How Jetta became a standalone brand
Jetta was spun off from VW Group and local partner FAW in 2019 to serve China's budget-conscious buyers. It essentially fills the gap left by Skoda, which has exited the Chinese market after a prolonged sales slump. As of 2026 Jetta operates as a fully independent entity with its own supply chain integration. The brand is targeting annual sales of 400,000 to 500,000 units, with five new models planned by 2028, four of which will carry electrified powertrains.
VW's other Beijing debuts

ID. Aura T6
Jetta wasn't the only story from VW Group's Beijing media night. The ID. Aura T6, a fully electric midsize SUV built through the FAW-VW joint venture, also broke cover bringing conventional VW styling with split LED headlights and a full-width rear light bar.

ID. Unyx 09
Alongside it, the ID. Unyx 09 sedan arrived as a sibling to the recently launched ID. Unyx 08 SUV, co-developed with Xpeng and featuring that brand's smart driving technology. Both models use the new CEA electrical architecture and are destined for the Chinese market, with the ID. Unyx 09 due to go on sale there in the second half of 2026.
The Jetta X won't be coming to Australia. It's a China-only play, designed specifically to take on homegrown NEV rivals at a price point VW's mainline brands simply can't match.
For Australian buyers interested in Volkswagen's local lineup, the ID.4 and ID.5 remain the accessible EV options for now.
It's a smart move for VW in China - but Australian buyers chasing an affordable electric SUV will need to look elsewhere for now.
