smart has launched the #5 electric SUV in Australia, with its largest model yet priced from $58,900 before on-road costs. Three grades are offered, and customer deliveries begin in November.

The mid-size #5 sits above the small #1 and #3 in the local range and takes smart into the country's most contested EV segment. It goes up against the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5 and BYD Sealion 7, as well as two rivals from within the Geely family.

smart is owned 50/50 by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and the #5 shares its underpinnings with the Zeekr 7X, while the Polestar 4 is another stablemate in the same price territory.

Range, charging and performance

Every #5 uses an 800V electrical architecture and a 100kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, with 94kWh usable. DC charging peaks at 400kW, allowing a 10-80% top-up in less than 18 minutes under ideal conditions. AC charging runs at up to 22kW.

Vehicle-to-load is standard across the range, so the battery can run camping gear or small appliances.

The #5 was styled by Mercedes-Benz's global design team and adopts a boxier, more upright shape than smart's smaller SUVs. It measures 4695mm long on a 2900mm wheelbase, with 630L of boot space expanding to 1530L with the rear seats folded, plus an illuminated storage compartment under the bonnet.

• Premium adds: 20-inch alloys, augmented reality head-up display, 13-inch OLED passenger screen, 20-speaker Sennheiser audio, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a hands-free tailgate
• Brabus adds: 21-inch alloys, red brake calipers, an Alcantara steering wheel, Brabus and off-road drive modes, and simulated engine sound

Safety gear includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, safe exit warning and seven airbags. The #5 is yet to be tested by ANCAP, but it scored five stars from Euro NCAP in 2025 and was named that body's best in class large SUV.

smart covers the #5 with a five-year/150,000km warranty, while the battery is covered for eight years/150,000km. Servicing is due every 12 months or 20,000km.

Deliveries start in November through distributor LSH Auto Australia, which sells smart from three showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. An ANCAP rating has not yet been announced.
