Nissan Australia will reveal the first details of a new electrified model this Thursday, 8 October, and everything points to the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute.

The brand hasn't named the vehicle yet. It says the newcomer brings electrified performance and greater capability to a key segment, and has been extensively tested and tuned for Australian conditions.

That description fits the Frontier Pro closely. Camouflaged right-hand-drive prototypes have been photographed at Nissan's training and development centre in Melbourne's south-east and on Victorian roads in recent months.

What we know about the Nissan Frontier Pro

Co-developed with Chinese partner Dongfeng, the body-on-frame Frontier Pro pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with an electric motor mounted in the transmission. Combined outputs are 300kW and 800Nm.

Because the motor sits in the gearbox, the ute keeps a conventional low-range transfer case, backed by a rear locking differential for off-road work. It's rated to tow 3500kg and has vehicle-to-load outlets in the tub for tools and accessories.

Overseas claims put fuel use at about 6.9L/100km with up to 135km of electric-only driving, though both figures are likely to change under Australian testing. Inside, there's a 10-inch digital driver display, a 14.6-inch touchscreen and front seats with heating, ventilation and massage.

Australian specification hasn't been locked in, and it's not yet clear whether the ute will keep the Frontier Pro name here or wear Navara badging.

Local tuning could set it apart from other Chinese-built utes. Every new-generation Nissan Navara sold in Australia rides on suspension developed by Melbourne engineering firm Premcar, and Nissan's emphasis on local tuning hints the Frontier Pro may get more than the usual driver-assist recalibration.

ModelPowerTorque
Nissan Frontier Pro300kW800Nm
JAC Hunter PHEV360kW1010Nm
BYD Shark 6321kW650Nm

GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV300kW750Nm
Ford Ranger PHEV207kW697Nm

Only the JAC Hunter out-torques the Nissan, and it comfortably outmuscles the Ranger PHEV on both measures.

Thursday's announcement is expected to confirm the model for Australia. Earlier reports pointed to a local arrival as soon as late 2026, with customer deliveries starting in 2027.
