MG has confirmed the MG4 EV Urban is headed to Australia, positioning it as an affordable electric hatchback priced in line with equivalent petrol vehicles. A firm on-sale date hasn't been announced, but interest registration is open now at MG’s website.

Two battery options will be available: 43kWh and 54kWh. Both use a front-wheel drive layout with torsion beam rear suspension helping free up cabin space despite the car's compact exterior dimensions.

MG says the interior will seat five adults with rear passengers up to 6'3" accommodated with adequate head and legroom. Boot space is 382 litres.

Specs at a glance

  • Battery options: 43kWh / 54kWh
  • Drive: Front-wheel drive
  • Wheels: 17" Starburst alloy
  • Boot: 382 litres
  • Safety target: 5-star ANCAP
  • Warranty: 10 years (with MG dealer servicing)

Pricing hasn't been confirmed, but MG is targeting parity with comparable internal combustion vehicles - a bold claim that would place it among the more accessible EVs on sale in Australia.

The car will support one-pedal driving, home and public charging and comes with a full ADAS suite as standard. Styling cues include a full-width rear LED light bar and 17-inch alloy wheels.

MG Motor Australia's Marketing Director Dimitri Andreatidis said the Urban was built for how Australians actually use their cars - weekday commutes and weekend trips - without the price premium that typically comes with EVs.

The 10-year warranty, backed by MG's 100-plus dealer network, adds long-term ownership confidence to what is shaping up as a genuinely competitive entry-level EV package.

Pricing and availability will be confirmed closer to launch.
