MG is bringing a new, more affordable version of its MG4 electric hatchback to Australia in April. Called the MG4 EV Urban, it slots below the existing MG4 lineup with smaller batteries, a front-wheel drive only setup, and a price that's expected to come in well under the current model's $37,990 starting point.
Two battery options are on offer: a 43kWh standard range and a 54kWh extended range, both using lithium iron phosphate chemistry. WLTP range figures from UK specs put those at 325km and up to 416km respectively. Both support DC fast charging at up to 87kW, with a 10-80% charge taking around 30 minutes.
Power comes from a single front-mounted motor producing between 110kW and 118kW depending on the variant, with 250Nm in both cases. That puts 0-100km/h in the 9.5-second ballpark, which won't set pulses racing but is more than adequate for city use.
The Urban is actually bigger than the standard MG4, stretching 4395mm long on a 2750mm wheelbase. Boot space is 568 litres with seats up, expanding to 1364 litres folded, which is around 200 litres more than the regular car.

Inside, expect a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and a full suite of driver assist tech including adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, and autonomous emergency braking.
Australian pricing hasn't been confirmed yet, but based on the UK gap between the two models, expect something in the low-$30,000s before on-road costs. That puts it in direct competition with the BYD Dolphin Essential ($29,990) and above the BYD Atto 1 ($23,990), which remains the segment's price benchmark.
Full specs and pricing will land when the car goes on sale next month.
