Chery wants Australia to name its plug-in hybrid diesel ute
Chery is crowdsourcing a name for its upcoming world-first plug-in hybrid diesel ute, with the winner taking home the first example delivered in Australia when it arrives later this year.

The competition opens today, 12 March 2026, and runs until 26 March. Entrants submit a proposed name plus a short explanation via the Chery Australia website, with shortlisted options going to a public vote before Chery makes the final call.
The ute itself is the headline act. It pairs a diesel engine with plug-in hybrid technology, a combination no production ute has offered before. Specs confirmed so far include a 1,000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, putting it squarely in the territory of the HiLux, Ranger and BT-50.

Chery hasn't locked in pricing or a specific on-sale date beyond "late 2026," but the naming competition suggests a local launch is closer than it might seem. The brand is already established in Australia with its SUV lineup, so the dealer and support network won't be starting from scratch.
Whether Australians take the competition seriously or try to name it something ridiculous is anyone's guess, but the crowdsourcing angle gives Chery genuine local cut-through at zero media spend.
For anyone who wants a shot at winning the first one off the boat, entries are open at cherymotor.com.au/ute-name-comp.
