BMW Australia has confirmed pricing and specification for the fifth-generation X5, which reaches local showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026. The range opens with the diesel X5 40d xDrive at $143,900 before on-road costs, followed by the petrol X5 40 xDrive at $145,900.

An all-electric iX5 and an X5 50e plug-in hybrid arrive in the first quarter of 2027.

The 40d xDrive replaces the xDrive30d and asks $4000 more, while the 40 xDrive takes over from the xDrive40i for an extra $2000. Both come with more power and a longer standard equipment list than the variants they replace.

Engines and performance

Each engine is a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, an eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The diesel gains 20kW and 20Nm over the outgoing xDrive30d, and the petrol is up 14kW and 20Nm.

At 4994mm long on a 3035mm wheelbase, the new BMW X5 is longer than before but slightly lower and narrower. Boot space is 655 litres and towing capacity is 3500kg, though the trailer hitch preparation is a $2500 option. There is no third-row seat option at launch, so every Australian X5 is a five-seater.

Inside, the X5 picks up BMW Panoramic iDrive running Operating System X, with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a 14.6-inch passenger display, a Panoramic Vision projection along the base of the windscreen and a 3D head-up display.

The options list is shorter than it used to be. M Sport Pro costs $3600, the Comfort Package adds heated rear seats and four-zone climate control for $2300, and air suspension with rear-axle steering is $7000. Merino leather replaces the standard Veganza trim for $8300.

Year to date, the X5 is Australia's second best-selling large luxury SUV with 2117 sales, behind the Land Rover Defender and ahead of the Lexus RX, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Orders are open now ahead of first deliveries before the end of the year. Pricing for the iX5 and X5 50e will be announced closer to their showroom arrival in early 2027.
